Outdoor Sockets for Patio and Garden – How Many Points to Plan?

When planning outdoor installations, safety and weather resistance are the priority. Patio and garden sockets are one of the elements most often overlooked at the design stage. Later, there's no power for connecting lights, lawn mower, or electric barbecue.

Outdoor points should be part of the first electrical installation planning pass, not something added after paving, facades, and garden irrigation are finished.

How Many Outdoor Sockets to Plan?

Recommendations for a single-family home:

  • Patio: 2-4 sockets.
  • Garden: minimum 1 weatherproof point.
  • Additional point near the plot boundary for pump or garden lighting.

What IP Rating and Protection to Choose?

Outdoors, weatherproof sockets are mandatory:

  • IP44 – minimum (splash protection).
  • IP55 – best rain protection.
  • Separate circuit + RCD + surge protection.

For protection coordination, use the same logic as your indoor circuit breaker selection: cable size, breaker size, and RCD strategy must be matched to the actual use case.

Mounting Height and Location

  • Patio: 30-50 cm above deck/paving.
  • Garden: on a post or in a sealed enclosure.

What Else Is Worth Planning?

When designing patio electrical installations, think ahead:

  • Step and garden lighting,
  • Socket for car vacuum,
  • Power supply for hot tub or pool pump.

If the outdoor area includes technical equipment, reserve space in the distribution board for those extra circuits instead of grouping everything under one generic garden socket line.

A well-done outdoor installation means comfort year-round – no cables, extension cords, or makeshift solutions.
